PCT mile 2290-2303 13 miles
Elev 5000-4300
Didn't set our alarm but we ended up waking at 7 and hiking at 8:15. Peggy didn't sleep well due to fatigue and I just crashed. It never rained which we are very thankful of. Today is a day of just getting to White Pass and a true zero day. Sore and tired we had to get out of the lake area and up over another pass then down, down to White Pass and Hwy 12.
We did hike thru some pretty country, volcanic spires and red cinder rocks. More tiny alpine meadows and flowers. The clouds followed us swirling around and spitting mist so we put on our Packas which are a poncho with pack cover attached.
We left Goat Rocks Wilderness and almost immediately saw a chair lift! White Pass must be close! Not so, another 6 miles downhill which took forever since we were looking forward to it. The last few miles are always long. We came out of the woods onto Hwy 12 and road walked .7 miles to a store and gas station where they held our resupply boxes. Once we had them in hand the cashier asked customers who were going to Packwood if they would take 2 hikers into town. We got a ride with a couple vacationing from France, Michelle and Leland.
They were enjoying hiking and visiting national parks in 4 states and it was a pleasure to get to know them on the 25 mile drive.
We had no luck calling ahead for motel reservations so we just walked into every motel in town until we found 1 room available. We got groceries, ordered pizza to go, came back and ate, showered and did peasant laundry in the bathtub kneading it with our feet as though making wine! Then with laundry hanging all around us we slept the sleep of the dead. Sheets feel so good!
Tomorrow is a resupply and rest day.
