PCT mile 2262-2277 15 miles
Elev 4695-5592
Dampness set in last night and the tent is full of condensation today. I'll need to dry things out on a break today. I forgot to set my alarm and Peggy couldn't wake me up til 5:45. Packed everything wet, filtered 3 liters and started hiking. Soon we had to use head nets and Deet to keep from going crazy with the bugs. We are going through a basin with mucky lakes and still ponds great for mosquitoes breeding. The trail is brushy and gets us wet as we walk. Nothing to see and I just want to get out of here fast. We ended up doing a faster pace than usual, 5.5 miles in 2hrs 15 min. I think I really just wanted to get out of that lake basin! We took a short break and passed a sign saying we were entering Goat Rocks Wilderness which is a highlight of the PCT. Hiking 4.5 more miles we had lunch and met 3 young men and 1 older man hiking SoBo. Polish (a young man from Poland) Reach an older man, Fuzzy and Warmup Mile. We asked them about trail conditions in Goat Rocks.
Laying all our gear on trees and bushes we even set up tents to dry and actually got in to snack and rest out of the mosquitoes. At 2:00 we moved on and came around the basin and up to higher ground. Here's Peggy looking down on the lakes where we'd been as we climbed along the mountainside higher and higher.
We descend a short distance to a lovely stream and wildflowers with a campsite right in the middle. Our tents are facing each other in this tiny spot.
Our routine tonight is to rinse socks, wash faces, hands and boil water for dinner. I fixed Carrot Ginger Bisque and vegies over rice. After dinner a thru hiker named Crazy Nuts came in and camped above us, he's making really good time! I'm thinking of Robin who will be helping Carrie move to her new home in Idaho tomorrow and also of Colleen and Denver getting married Aug 3.
A little bit homesick out here tonight.
